We all know the experience too well. The creeping crud is going around. It seems like every-other person you know is coming down with strep, a wicked cold, or a stomach bug. You do your best to keep to stay away from people who are sick, but it almost seems inevitable. Suddenly, despite your best efforts, you feel the sickies coming on.
What do you do?
Here’s how our family attacks these common illnesses that either 1) keep it from blossoming full-bore or; 2) help us gain the resilience to rebound much more quickly.
Although we may feel illness coming on in our throat, nose, or head, the first thing we do to stay well or stop bugs in their tracks is to apply oils to the soles of our feet. The feet have the most pores per square inch on the body, so this makes them an extremely effective place to apply our oils, quickly putting them to work throughout our body. We do this by using oils in a roller bottle (available at places like AromaTools.com). On Guard® is our first choice when it comes to bolstering our natural immunity. (You can read my previous post on why On Guard® is our go-to oil for supporting the immune system.) Because using oils full strength on the skin can irritate or burn, I fill a roller bottle half-way with On Guard® oil blend and top it off with fractionated coconut oil (FCO) to roll liberally on the soles of our feet. Slide on some socks and you’re good to go.
Melaleuca, also known as tea tree oil, also has powerful purifying properties. We can roll that on our feet simply by using doTERRA’s convenient Melaleuca Touch. Already blended with FCO, it’s ready to apply right away.
Take Care of that throat
We LOVE the doTERRA lozenges. At the first sign of feeling crummy we reach for On Guard® Protecting Throat Drops. Not only do they sooth, they also bolster that immunity. Breathe® Respiratory Drops not only sooth the throat, they also help with any congestion that may be creeping in.
Gargling is helpful too. The cool part with oils is that it takes so little to yield great results. So a 4- 8 oz glass of water with 1 drop of On Guard®, 1 drop of Melaleuca, and 1 drop of Lemon is enough to create a helpful mouthwash that really works when you feel a bug coming on. Don’t like to gargle? We also love to create our concoctions in a small 2 ounce glass bottle that can go anywhere for relief on the spot.
Drinking plenty of good old water is always critical. We enhance our water with any of the oils used for the gargle or spray. Lemon and Wild Orange are our favorites. Make the water hot, add some honey, and drink it as a tea for comfort.
If you need to pull out the BIG GUNS, try the FLU BOMB:
In an empty 15 ml glass bottle combine…
15 drops Lemon
10 drops Melaleuca
10 drops On Guard®
10 drops Oregano
10 drops Frankincense
Shake well before using.
Warm a mug of water add 2 drops, stir, and drink.
You can also place 2-3 drops in a veggie capsule and swallow it down.
Clean and Refresh the Air
Diffusing is a must for our family. We diffuse every day almost without exception. However, when we feel illness coming on what we diffuse may change. Here is what we often diffuse when we’re trying to show a bug the door:
- Of course, On Guard® is a given.
- Oregano has powerful health-promoting benefits, and when combined with Peppermint it has been shown to work BETTER than when used individually. These two blended in a diffuser make a good bug buster.
- Orange, Melaleuca, and Frankincense lift the mood along with supporting immunity as a diffuser blend.
- Breathe® Respiratory Blend is also a staple for us. Aside from diffusing, we also simply put 1 drop on the palm of a hand, rub the hands together, cup the hands over the nose and mouth, and inhale deeply. It’s like having your own, natural, chemical-free inhaler.
These are just a few of the basic ways that we have cut down on the number of days we spend in bed with the latest bacterial and viral infections making the rounds. They offer a great place for you to start. They are some of the many reasons we love doTERRA essential oils. Watch for upcoming posts on additional ways to keep those bugs at bay.
