I can’t point to an exact time when it all imploded. I think it happened slowly, subtly when none of us were adequately attentive. America lost its collective mind. It involves politicians and polarizing rhetoric. Public shaming, name-calling, and erroneously claiming moral high ground became blood sport with we citizens as the unlucky pawns. Igniting the fires of anger to exploit and advance a cause became a matter of course, and it seems we can’t go back.
I have ruminated and prayed, and ruminated and prayed some more this past week. Trying to make sense of all the senseless things I’m hearing surrounding the cold-blooded murder of 50 precious lives and the ruthless injury of 53 more will do that to a person. The insanity has reached a fever pitch that has escalated far beyond the immediate tragedy. After all of the reading, and watching, and ruminating, and praying, I think the Holy Spirit has helped me to put my finger on it.
The majority of America has abandoned Truth.
Think I’m crazy? Consider this. America as a nation was founded by a group of men seeking liberty, justice, and the fruits of their hard labor. They fled religious persecution and hoped of a better life in this new land. In its founding, the nation appointed delegates from the 13 colonies to draft a constitution forming a centralized federal government. While this process was contentious, the framers were able to come to enough of an agreement to pass the Constitution of the United States in 1790 with the Bill of Rights (the Constitution’s first 10 amendments) being passed nearly 18 months later in 1791. The critical structure for this country was debated and adopted by a diverse group of individuals from merchants and farmers to attorneys and bankers, who were largely able to come to a general consensus on this new form of 3 co-equal branches of government that would allow individuals, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” One of the framers, John Adams, is quoted in a 1798 letter to his wife as saying, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
In Adams’ statement lies the heart of the matter. We have abandoned THE Truth to create our own alternate reality. We have shed our morals and watched people abandoned their faith in God by the multitudes. Secularism is dismissive of the founding values that set this very nation in place. And this has birthed a culture in which we are all god, small “g.”
A significant slide occurred in this nation about 30 years ago when moral relativism became the prevailing wisdom from those in positions to be most heard. We traded in the Truth for the notions that all truths are equal. What’s good for you may not be good for me. There are many paths to the same God, many believed. “As long as I’m not hurting anyone,” was the new deluded moral code, the problem being that we fooled ourselves into thinking that certain things weren’t hurting anyone. With ever-increasing measure, we became desensitized to our own corruption. Who would have ever thought that an impeached president who stated, “That depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is,” could remain in office?
Since those days, we have slid into even further depths of depravity. Now right is wrong and wrong is right. “What I do in my own bedroom is my own business,” has now been exchanged for, “You must embrace what I do in my bedroom or you are hateful and must be sued and silenced.” The unthinkable has happened as we have crossed the line in bioethics, nodding approvingly at creating a chimera, the once creepy sci-fi creature birthed from the cross of a human with an animal. Suddenly, “all men are created equal,” has been exchanged for overcompensation to right past wrongs — those considered to be in the majority must be shamed, oppressed, and made to pay for the past sins of those living generations ago. Men have become wimpified and women unsupported as gender roles have been kicked to the curbside. Infanticide, euthanasia, and assisted suicide are now considered compassionate. Speech decrying those who would seek to torture and murder our citizens is shamed as phobic. And accepting personal responsibility or admitting mistake is to be avoided at all costs.
The culture is so utterly confusing because the rules, the “truth,” is as fluid as walking on gelatin.
Thank God that the framers and founders know what we can still know today! There is a Truth that is unchanging. It is Security in a shifting, insecure world. It is a Truth that they built this nation upon, if only we will still embrace it.
In this time of collective American insanity, perhaps even WORLD insanity, those of us who still look to the True North can take comfort in knowing, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8, NIV)
There is nothing new under the sun. Paul exposed similar depravity and cognitive dissidence before the fall of Rome,
For the wrath of God is breaking through from heaven, opposing all manifestations of ungodliness and wickedness by the people who do wrong to keep God’s truth in check. These people are not ignorant about what can be known of God, because He has shown it to them with great clarity. From the beginning, creation in its magnificence enlightens us to His nature. Creation itself makes His undying power and divine identity clear, even though they are invisible; and it voids the excuses and ignorant claims of these people because, despite the fact that they knew the one true God, they have failed to show the love, honor, and appreciation due to the One who created them! Instead, their lives are consumed by vain thoughts that poison their foolish hearts. They claim to be wise; but they have been exposed as fools, frauds, and con artists—only a fool would trade the splendor and beauty of the immortal God to worship images of the common man or woman, bird or reptile, or the next beast that tromps along.
So God gave them just what their lustful hearts desired. As a result, they violated their bodies and invited shame into their lives. How? By choosing a foolish lie over God’s truth. They gave their lives and devotion to the creature rather than to the Creator Himself, who is blessed forever and ever. Amen. This is why God released them to their own vile pursuits, and this is what happened: they chose sexual counterfeits—women had sexual relations with other women and men committed unnatural, shameful acts because they burned with lust for other men. This sin was rife, and they suffered painful consequences.
Since they had no mind to recognize God, He turned them loose to follow the unseemly designs of their depraved minds and to do things that should not be done. Their days are filled with all sorts of godless living, wicked schemes, greed, hatred, endless desire for more, murder, violence, deceit, and spitefulness. And, as if that were not enough, they are gossiping, slanderous, God-hating, rude, egotistical, smug people who are always coming up with even more dreadful ways to treat one another. They don’t listen to their parents; they lack understanding and character. They are simple-minded, covenant-breaking, heartless, and unmerciful; they are not to be trusted. Despite the fact that they are fully aware that God’s law says this way of life deserves death, they fail to stop. And worse—they applaud others on this destructive path. [Romans 1:18-32, VOICE]
Sadly, most Americans don’t take heed to what happened to the Roman Empire. Surely, America will lose more than its mind if we keep up on this trajectory. Handing a nation in this sad shape over to our children is definitely NOT exactly what I had in mind when I sought to raise a family.
